He has worked on outbreaks including Ebola, dengue, Zika, influenza and COVID-19, contributing real-time analysis to multiple governments and health agencies. From 2013–17 he held a Medical Research Council Career Development Award in Biostatistics, and prior to joining LSHTM he was a research associate at Imperial College London. His popular science articles have appeared in The Observer, Financial Times, Wired and New Scientist, and he is author of The Rules of Contagion, named a 2020 Science Book of the Year by The Guardian, Times and FT. <image:caption>Zeb Farooq Amey Zeb Farooq is a community integration leader who has spent the last fifteen years promoting inclusivity and cohesiveness in society. He has done this in an exclusively voluntary capacity, most recently as a member of the Prince’s Trust North West Regional Leadership Group. In 2019 he won the WISE Man of the Year Award and in 2020 was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to young people. As an APMP Professional certified Bid Manager with a background in mathematics, Zeb has dedicated almost a decade to winning contracts within the Clean Energy and Defence sector, and now works in the Transport Sector with Amey. Zeb believes that there is a lack of accessible role models for young girls in the STEM arena, especially in areas of high deprivation, and that mentoring is vital in raising their aspirations. Zeb is particularly passionate about working with young Muslim girls who can face a double disadvantage when entering the world of work (gender and ethnicity), and often those from low socio-economic backgrounds face a triple disadvantage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr Richard Burguete Director of the Postgraduate Institute for Measurement Science, National Physical Laboratory Richard Burguete joined NPL as the Director of the Postgraduate Institute for Measurement Science (PGI) in September 2015 following almost 20 years working at Airbus in Structures Engineering, and latterly as transnational Programme Manager for Structures Test Research. His PGI role covers working across NPL and with academic and industry partners to develop a vibrant and inclusive postgraduate institute, focusing on the development of collaborative research and funding whilst creating an organisation that provides training in measurement science, professional skills and an engaging cohort experience for all our postgraduate students, wherever they are based. After gaining a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield he joined the Experimental Stress Analysis group at Airbus in Bristol where developed and applied optical measurement techniques for structural testing. During this time, he sponsored many postgraduate research projects and led the development of the Structures Test R&D strategy for Airbus as well as managing the associated transnational test programme. This experience provided a deep understanding of the value of collaboration to advance academic research and its industrial application. Working in government now, Richard is actively involved in STEM Futures, a partnership across industry, academia and the public sector centred on skills development through placements and knowledge-sharing. Richard is passionate about frameworks like STEM Futures being an ideal platform for continuous professional development, leading to the development of extremely desirable skillsets for the benefit of industry and academia alike.</image:caption>

It ranges from designing public services to improving education and health, assessing the infrastructure needs for different parts of the country, ensuring the UK is on track to achieve net zero carbon emissions and level up the economy. Policy professionals’ work centres around 3 activities: developing and improving government strategies ensuring democratic accountability overseeing delivery Strategy Policy professionals solve problems and improve outcomes, typically with input from a wide range of professions. They also need to understand the wider context of their policy area, including international comparisons, citizens’ experience, the latest evidence and history. Policy professionals consider and improve existing policies as well as respond to new challenges. Examples of policy work include the design of public services, legislative and regulatory changes and promoting behaviour change. Democracy Policy professionals have a key role to play in ensuring democratic accountability and making policy that truly works for citizens. They do this by working collaboratively across the public sector, private sector and civil society to galvanise effort around government objectives. Delivery Policy professionals also ensure effective delivery of policy, evaluating its impact and adapting as necessary. This can include managing systems, for example monitoring crime trends, skill levels, coronavirus (COVID-19) infections and proposing interventions to improve performance. In some cases, policy professionals will directly deliver grant programmes and smaller projects - orchestrating the input of the other professions.</image:caption>
